This is not just a one-time data migration, you can play on consoles on one day and play on PC on another, with shared progression. Not only that, but progression also carries over from platform to platform. The switch to the Epic launcher is so that the game can run entirely with cross-platform play, on PS4 and Xbox One. The launch sees the game, initially being available on its own launcher on PC migrating to the Epic Games Store. Dauntless, the free-to-play Monster Hunter-like hunting game, has exited open beta and is now released in full.
